Biography

Dr Karen M. Smith, Emerita Professor at Queen’s University in the Faculty of Health Sciences. She served as Department Head 1998-2008 and as Associate Dean of Continuing Professional and Faculty Development 2011-2018, Queen’s University. She is affiliated with Providence Care Hospital and Kingston Health Sciences Centre. She was attending physiatrist for the Acquired Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Services from 1994 to 2022.

Dr Smith completed her Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency training at McMaster University. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and Senior Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Her clinical interests and expertise are in ABI, SCI and pediatric rehabilitation. Her research interests have been in the areas of primary care for persons with disabilities, exercise, wound care and neurogenic bowel management. She has 49 peer reviewed publications. She is currently part of the teaching Faculty of the ECHO Project Skin and Wound Care and the International Interprofessional Wound Care Course.
